The original church was built in the VIII century where the Roman Forum was located. In 1070, Pope Alexander II started the construction of the current church which was finished only in the XIV century. The protraction of the construction works for about three centuries led to that mixture of Romanesque Pisan and Gothic styles that characterize the building. The church, entirely in marble, has a four storey-arcade loggia richly adorned and on its top the statue of Sain Micheal the Archangel.
